Wanganui Community College
The establishment of the Wanganui Community College is of prime importance to the greater Wanganui region. This is the sole reason for the Mayor of Ohakune, Mr Bill Taylor jumping up and down as vigorously as he did over the issue of the composition of the Community College Council. His major concern was that local input, as a separate entity and independent of the present Secondary Schools Boards, be made possible. A Community College, or Technical Insthute, is a form of tertiary education and, as such, not an adjunct of, nor a step removed from secondary school, he said. Representation for the Waimarino area on , the Council is likely to be a
single member, representative of the three local authorities and the local secondary school Board. It is, of course, imperative that this person be able to express what is needed for our district and our communities. The rich diversity of local enterprises, such as tourism and forestry present indicators. These must be promoted and find reflection in Community College programmes. His Worship attended the meeting held recently . in Wanganui to consider the issue and as forcefully as possible presented these views. He said that it is fortunate, indeed, that, of the two hundred or so others attending the meeting, there were others who saw things in a similar light.
that an institution of this nature has for us here", he said, "is in what it is able to offer our people; not only post-secondary school leavers but adult learners as well. As a Community College it must be aware of the wider community it is designed to serve.
