Busy time for Raetihi Ranger

Kevin Miller, who combines the roles of Raetihi borough foreman, dog ranger and stock ranger has had a particularly busy time recently. In less than two weeks he has impounded the following animals which were found wandering the streets of Raetihi. One mob of 55 sheep / another mob of 15 sheep / 5 horses / 1 goat / 1 bull /' numerous dogs. Kevin Miller has been able to trace most of the owners without much difficulty through local knowledge but to find so many animals in the streets during the last fortnight has surprised him. He wishes to remind owners of dogs particularly, that if their animals are

found on the streets within the borough, with a dog collar on but without the yellow registration disc attached, they are deemed to be unregistered and could be treated accordingly. Within the strict terms of the relevant Act the ranger is empowered to impound any stray animal, advertise its description and then, after 7 days, if not claimed, order its destruction. Kevin Miller wants to avoid having to take this final step but makes a plea for owners to take better care of their pets and other animals. He also warns people that it is a serious offence to retrieve their animals from the pound without authorisation . . . this has happened recently.
