Raetihi Senior Citizen... 101 not out
Mr Fred Honore of Raetihi celebrated his 101st birthday last Friday with an 'open house' invitation to his family and many friends and well-wishers in the Waimarino. Mr Honore was born in Foxton on the 8th July 1882 and first came to live in the Waimarino in 1916 when he was transferred from the Mangaweka to the Raetihi branch of Carters. He had been with Carters since he was 19 years of age (1901) and remained with that company, as an accountant, until he retired 21 years ago. He continued to practice accountancy in a small way locally until he was 98. Last year, when he turned 100, the occasion was celebrated on a much larger ^^tie with a huge reception ^ntended by a couple of
hundred wellwishers in the Raetihi R.F.C. clubrooms. On that day he received a congratulatory telegram from Her Majesty the Queen. Last Friday's function at the home of Mrs Stanish in Pitt Street, where he stays, was a quieter but none the less warm and friendly occasion to mark the first birthday of Mr Honore' s second century. Dave and Martha Kinnaird were once again the main organisers behind this year's party just as they were last year. When asked how it felt to be 101, Mr Honore — who still walks into town fairly regularly to post his letters — said that apart from feeling the cold these days he was fine and very appreciative of the kindness and hospitality he received
from the residents of Raetihi. Mr Honore is believed to be Raetihi's first centenarian. His sister Christine Singleton will be 91 next month.
