New Barracks for ATG

The nearly completed Crete Barracks in Waiouru is due to be officially opened on 19 August by Major General B.M. Poananga C.B., C.B.E. the retired Chief of General Staff. The barracks, which are divided into two separate wings (left and right of picture), will accommodate 60 permanent camp personnel in individual rooms. The smaller building, in centre of picture between the two main blocks, houses a communal lounge and recreation room upstairs,

with the various service rooms, including kitchen and laundry, on the ground floor. The 800-man Mess is next door. The major contractor for the work was Gemini Pepper Construction of Wanganui but a local subcontractor — Dobson Bros of Raetihi — was responsible for all plumbing, drainage and roofing work. It is hoped to have several veterans from the actual Crete campaign present at the official opening next month.
