Raetihi Borough News
At last week's monthly meeting Raetihi Borough Councii decided not to accept the status of district community councii made in an offer from the Waimarino County Councii. The offer was made by the Waimarino County Councii in an attempt to solve the problem created by the resignation of Raetihi Borough Councii' s town clerk, Mr Tony Chase, last year. Since then Waimarino County Councii clerk Mrs Hope Vaughan has been acting town clerk for the Borough. Instead of 'district community councii' Raetihi Borough Councii would prefer to join with the Waimarino County Councii within a full District Councii framework which would bring both councils together on an equal basis. fMeanwhile Borough hncillors expressed the sire to continue with the present joint administration arrangements until a more formal accommodation between the two local authorities can be arranged. * * * Councillors were assured by Raetihi's Mayor the Rev Bob Peck that the Waimarino Hospital will continue to provide and maintain the present high standard of health care services to its patients. The mayor was able to give this assurance following a meeting between members of the Wanganui Hospital Board, and a deputation representing local authorities in Raetihi o^Wednesday. r J. B'byack the Wanganui Hospital Boards chief executive officer and local board member Mr G.W. Harvey met with Raetihi's Mayor Bob Peck and deputy Mayor Garrick Workman, Ohakune's Mayor Bill Taylor and Mr R.S. Godfrey. The local deputation,
which had been concerned about the possibilty of a firm of private contractors being employed at the hospital, was assured that there would be no cut in services and they were given an 'unconditional guarantee' that the present standard of health services would be maintained. * * * Councillors endorsed the letter which Ken Holmes, Raetihi Primary School principal, had sent to the Minister of Police concerning the recent spate of crimes at the school. In his letter Mr Holmes had brought the Minister's attention to the damage and vandalism that had occurred at the school and had strongly urged that a second constable should be stationed in Raetihi to bring the Waimarino police presence up to its former full strength of two resident constables. Councillors expressed ' concern that once again the Waimarino police force is about to be depleted from three to two constables — Marty Sutherland in Ohakune and Kevin Entwisle in Raetihi — until a replacement is appointed for John McCartney who is transferring to Napier. Mayor Bob Peck said that if every crime that was committed — no matter how small — was reported, the resulting statistics would speak for themselves. He strongly urged residents of Raetihi to report every single offence so that a true picture of the crime rate can be conveyed to those responsible for making police appointments. * * * The proposal to introduce judder bars at the entrance to the Raetihi Motor Camp was questioned at last Wednesday night's meeting. Whilst it would certainly
solve the problem of vehicles speeding through the camping ground concern was expressed at the possible damage to caravans. Councii decided to investigate the matter further. * * * It was announced that the trees for the councii rubbish dump had been ordered following approval by the Pest Destruction Board and a suitable costing. Some species had been questioned but this has now been resolved and planting is due to begin in a month's time. * * * Councillors resolved to recommend that the three local authorities in the area — Waimarino County, Ohakune Borough and Raetihi Borough — combine to administer the new Noise Control Act.
