Waimarino Rate Rise

Ratepayers within the Waimarino County are to have their rates increased by 14% this year. This was decided at last Thursday's monthly meeting in Raetihi. It had been expected that the rates would rise by only 7% but councillors believed that the higher rate this year would avoid the necessity for an even bigger rate rise next year. The Waimarino County is awaiting approval of grant money from the National Roads Board to upgrade the Pipiriki Road and the higher rates would enable the County Council to match the subsidy. The new rate is expected to bring in an additional $35,000.
