Ruapehu College

Senior examinations are now completed, except for the practieal section of forms 5 and 6 Home Economics. Staff are busy marking scripts and preparing reports for a senior report evening to be held in July. * * * A team of Inspectors from the Department of Education in Wellington is presently visiting Ruapehu College as part of a standard school inspection. * * * There was no sport involving College teams over the weekend of Saturday 18th June due to the snow. IJowever, a number of College hockey players travelled to Wanganui on Sunday to participate in a rep. tournament with Rangitikei, Wanganui and King Country. King Country was advised not to risk the roads, so a 2nd Wanganui team was mustered at 9.30am on Sunday morning to take their place. Also disappointing for the Secondary School team was the absence of a Rangitikei Schools team. * * * Ruapehu College pupils participating in the Senior and School teams were: Mary McCarthy, Thelma Berry, Eileen Berry, Linda Tapp, Wendy Palmer, Teresa McCarthy, Judy Kumeroa, Lisa Podjursky, Vicki Baker, Michelle Meyer, Raewyn Evans.

Results: Secondary Schools' team (Ruapehu & Taihape Colleges) v Wanganui A lost 5-1 (goal ~L. Tapp) v Wanganui B won 2-1 (goals W. Palmer, E. Berry). Senior (Ruapehu College, Taihape College, Rangers, Major Sports Taihape) v Wanganui A lost 4-0, v Rangitikei lost 7-0, v Wanganui B lost 4-1 (goal Karen Cranston). The games were the beginning of a buildup for the Senior team for National Tournament at Whangarei in August. The squad will be named shortly, and the need for a good deal of fitness training before then was evidenced in the games on Sunday. * * * Mr Mat Huiroa an officer from the Maori Affair^^ Department, Wangani^B visited the College o^^ Wednesday 22nd June to speak with prospective Trade Training candidates. * * * The Gymnasium is almost completed!! Pupil comments to date — 'massive', 'incredible', 'fantastic', 'boy, the floor is warm', 'can we wear bare feet?' * * * On Friday July 1st a Central Queensland under 17 team arrives in Ohakune to play a match against Ruapehu College 1st XV on Saturday 2nd. Anyone able to billet these boys should

contact Mr Ian Meredith at the College, phone 398. Assistance with billeting would be greatly appreciated- * * * Ruapehu College' s Horticulture programme continues to make good progress with the concreting of the shed floor by members of 5/Os, excavations for the glasshouse, the purchase of some mini propagators and the preparation of ground for the establishment of a berry fruit garden.
