No threat of milk shortage for time being
Despite recent threats of the possibility of milk shortages throughout the country, this area seems assured of a continuing supply. Town milk suppliers have not been awarded increases allowed to dairy farmers supplying to manufacturing units. This has lead to the possibility of town milk suppliers failing to renew contracts for town milk supply and switching to manufacturing supply. The average town milk supplier will miss out on about $7,500 over an 18 month period. However several factors should ensure good supply in the Ruapehu region according to Peter Jones, manager of Raetihi Pasteurised Milk Supply Co. Ltd. "For a start, we have five loyal, long term suppliers on whom we can count for continuing support" he said "In addition, downturn demand in Turangi haB meant that Taumarunui suppliers are producing a surplus of milk in winter. We will be taking this surplus to supplement our own supplies during peak winter demand. If demand goes crazy in winter then we can also buy surplus from Palmerston North. The only problem would arise if Manawaru suppliers changed dramatically to manufacturing supply, but I can't see that affecting us in the near future, and it certainly won't be a problem: this winter" said Mr Jones. "But I'm still sorry that our farmers are being short, changed after 39 years of working on the same coiM pensation system." 91
