Whanaake Rangataua Martial Arts
Whanaake Rangataua Martial Arts Association hosted a New Zealand Open Invitational Karate teams tournament, staged in Lower Hutt. The teams participating were from Hastings (2 teams), Hamilton, Lower Hutt (2 teams), Wellington and Whanaake Rangataua (2 teams). Each team consisted of five members, where the use of gloves and footpadding enabled full blows to be executed. C. Mareikura and W. Mareikura were part of the Whanaake Rangataua 'A' and 'B' teams respectively. Noel Akapita was chief referee for all the bouts. In the finals the two, 2 minute, rounds were contested between Whanaake Rangataua and Rangataua-o-Aotearoa (Wgtn). Three straight, but gruelling, wins to Whanaake Rangataua saw them take out the championship and the prize money. Whanaake Rangataua Karate team were: Sio Ah Wong (Petone) Charles Mareikura (Ohakune) John Studd (Petone) Vern Winitana (Porirua) Todd Bartlett (Petone)
