Okahu Herefords in Demand
Polled Hereford bulls from Pat O'Neill's Okahu stud at Raetihi are in great demand this season.
An Okahu 2 year old sold at the recent National Hereford Sale, Palmerston North for $5,500 being 4th top price at this prestige annual event. On Monday June 13th the stud's 13th annual sale
was held on the property. Solid buying support produced an average of $1,788 for the 24 bulls sold. Only two were passed and they too were later sold for a little over $1,000 each. Sale bulls were brought forward in good condition which is typical of the Okahu offering. Bulls from Okahu are currently being used as herd sires in some of New Zealand's top polled hereford studs including both Wilencote and Waihuka. Pat O'Neill's son Kerry offered two bulls from his Ruapehu stud these selling for $1,500 and $1,250. Mt View Station, Mangamahu provided good competition taking four Okahu bulls at up to $3,000 which was top price of the sale. Seven in-calf heifers were also offered but although they were a splendid line, lack of buyers meant that all but one were passed. Sale results: Okahu bulls: Mt View Station, Mangamahu $3,000, $2,400, $2,000, $1,800. P. Wanklyn, Gisborne, $2,900. Brooklands Farm, Hunterville, $2,400. K. Donald, Wanganui, $2,100.
