PROMOTIONAL CAMPAIGN BEGINS
A major promotional campaign began this week promoting the holiday attractions at Ohakune and the surrounding area.
Organised by the Ohakune Promotions Association, the campaign will run right through to September then after a short break run through November and part of December. Based on the theme 'Ohakune, where adventures begin', the current advertisement uses the sub theme 'Because there's more than just skiing' with body ecopy outlining Ohakune' s central location to the two major skifields; the advantages of mid-week skiing; the good accommodation, eating facilities and shops of Ohakune and Raetihi; golf, tennis, squash, trout fishing, tramping and jet boating. Various illustrations will highlight the advertisements which will appear in the Listener, Sunday News, Auckland Metro, Skier Magazine, Evening Post and other selected media. When space permits, the Bulletin will run a copy of the advertisement so that you can see what's been
done. Costing some $30,000, the campaign has been funded by local businessmen with the addition of an $8,000 subsidy from the Government's Tourist and Publicity Department. In addition to the advertising campaign, the association is also completing production of 40,000 copies of a regional promotional brochure. "We're happy with the concept of using print media instead of T.V." said Promotions Association spokesman Mike Wiggins. "Last year we got 3 weeks T.V. advertising for the same price as 3 months of print advertising this year". A deliberate move was made to promote summer activities and attractions addition to skiing, saH^^ Wiggins. "Part of the problem with this sort of activity is that the promotion is conducted outside the area to motivate people to come here, so locals often didn't appreciate the benefits of such a campaign".
