POLICE FILE
The Sheepskin Shop in Clyde Street, Ohakune was broken into in the early hours of Friday morning and about $3,000 worth of merchandise, mainly sheepskin jackets, stolen. A white Bedford CF van had been backed into the front doorway where a plate glass window was broken and four youths were seen at about 5am loading the van with the stolen merchandise. They were seen by two Tenderkist delivery men who tried to block the Bedford with their meat truck but, as one of the delivery men ran round to the police station to raise the alarm, the four youths managed to manoeuvre their vehicle free and made off towards Waiouru. By coincidence the Bedford had been seen in Waiouru two hours earlier by the same Tenderkist delivery crew.
Police would appreciate any report of sightings of this vehicle in Ohakune or Waiouru early on Friday morning. After the above incident was reported Cortstable Marty Sutherland checked other business premises in Ohakune and found that Reynolds Motors had been broken into. From there the culprits — perhaps the same ones — had stolen 2 calculators, a polaroid camera, a 12 volt car battery and a box of old car keys. The following night (Saturday) it was Raetihi's turn. Robin's Nest, Raetihi Dry Cleaners and Hasty Tasty Takeaways were all broken into and several items of merchandise ' as well as cash were stolen.
