Racing with BULLY
The Queens Birthday meetings at Ellerslie and Wanganui produced some fine racing and jumping with the favourites winning the big ones. Jean Rapier (Great Northern Hurdles) and Hunterville (Nescafe Great Northern Steeples) combined in the spedal double to pay approximately $15. At Wanganui Lord Hymac was too good both days, winning both the Hurdles and the Steeples. His display was really impressive and there will be more for him yet. Watch out for Nazman — he will win a race any day now. His first day effort at Wanganui was disappointing, but on the second day
he raced at the rear of the field and started his run with about 600metres to go. He was eventually just beaten by his stablemate Really True, so it was a notable quinella for trainer Del Roberts from Tauranga. Really True was ridden by Caroline Woods, another young lady who is destined to go to the top. This was only her 21st ride and she now has 4 winners and a number of placings. She rides very capably and I am sure she will hold up the fine tradition of lady jockeys such as Linda Jones, Diane Mosely, Debbie Healey and Maree Lyndon. One noticed at Wanganui which I think will win real soon was She's A Lady. This mare finished just behind the placed horses in the sprint and the signs are there for an early return. From the same Evan Rayner Stable is Lackland and he could pay the rent if you stay with him. My spies in the Waikato district tell me that a couple
of locals are on the verge of winning. They are Royal Reprieve and a gelding with the unfortunate name of Nuisance. The drum is out for Nuisance so I suggest you be in when he lines up again. Although Region was disappointing over fences at Foxton, he could still come up with better form at his next start. He is too good to drop after one bad performance. When the Manawatu Steeples comes up for decision a great battle will be on for sure. Horses of the calibre of Grey Ciilate, Grey Warbler, Lord Hymac, Sugarmagundi, Headford, Hunterville, Purcil are all likely starters, bat my long range pick will be Foaming Henri. He ran second at Wanganui, and looked as though the race would do him a ton of good — his jumping is very safe and sure. For the ladies we will stick with the jumps and Baraden will be worth a dollar. Remember Bully tips them first.
