MISSION PROGRAMME
The Waimarino is currently the scene of a Catholic Church Mission programme which is being conducted by two visiting Redemptorist priests, Father Frank Mullaghy and Father Pat Kearney. The Mission, which
began two weeks ago with a series of home visits, culminates this week with special masses within the St Joseph's Parish in Raetihi and Ohakune. Father Mullaghy, who is leading the Mission in the Waimarino, has been in
New Zealand for 15 months and is based in St Gerards Monastery in Wellington. Originally from County Mayo in Eire he obtained a Masters Degree at the National University of Ireland in Galway. After teaching for five years and further study in Rome he has been giving Missions and Retreats in his own country for most of his life. He helped to develop the 'New Mission' in Ireland to meet the challenges of the new age. Father Pat Kearney, whose parents were from Ireland, was born in Wellington and was .educated in
New Plymouth and Auckland. He studied for the priesthood and taught in a seminary in Auckland for 5 years before becoming provincial superior of all Redemptorists in New Zealand for the next 10 years. Father Kearney is at present rector of the monastery farm at Te Kawhata and has been conducting these Missions since 1955. During the course of the current Mission in the Waimarino Father Mullaghy and Father Kearney hope to visit about 250 homes in the area.
