Mystery Power Failure
Parts of Ohakune and surrounding areas, including Rangataua, were plunged into darkness fpr more than an hour just as dusk fell on the Saturday evening of Queens Birthday. The power failure occured after 5pm just as residents were arriving home to prepare the evening meal and just as the many visitors who were spending the holiday weekend in Ohakune arrived back in town from their first day's skiing on Turoa. King Country Electric Power Board staff soon identified the problem — a broken power cable near the Miro Street/Shannon Street transformer — and, by switching circuits to bypass the fault, managed to
restore power progressively to many of the areas, including the Junction, in less than an hour. However most of the central 'downtown' area remained in darkness for more than an hour as KCEPB linesman worked to repair the fault which remains something of a mystery ... the cable had appeared to snap spontaneously at the point where it was looped round a ceramic insulator.
