Why now?
Our forward planning, with premises and equipment involved, had indicated that a mid-June start for our first edition would have been preferable^ However that would have meant that we missed that all-important 'official' start of ski season when hundreds — perhaps thousands — of extra visitors come to this area to assess the conditions, to arrange accommodation, to prepare their holiday chalets and to join in the general revelry associated with the beginriing of another winter sports season. It was too good an opportunity to miss and it seemed appropriate that the first edition of a new local newspaper should coincide with the start of one of the Ruapehu region's major seasonal activities. We have therefore made a special effort to get this first edition out in the first week of June even though it meant preparing the 'news' well in advance and having it typeset in Auckland where our typesetter is stored until it can be installed in our Ohakune premises. In our first regular edition — due to be printed and published locally on Tuesday 14 June and weekly thereafter — we will report on a whole range 'of other news as it affects the yvider community, without fear or favour.
