Turoa Ski Report

"We will be opening for the Queens Birthday Weekend" said Tony Wright, manager for Turoa Skifields, when interviewed last Friday. "Depending on snow and weather conditions we hope to'open on Friday and stay open right through Queens Birthday Weekend" said Mr Wright. "Existing snow conditions are good and the prospects of a further snewfall before the weekend look promising with the approach of another southerly", he said. lf there's not enough natural snow on the Valley Beginners nursery slopes at the top of the Mountain Road, the intention is to help nature along with some man-made snow, but this will depend on getting suitable weather and te^*ature conditions at tn^Hrie. Whilst the early snows are a boon for the skier — the last time Turoa opened over Queens Birthday Weekend was in 1981 and that snow was all man-made — the heavy snowfalls have delayed the construction of

the new Pomagalski T-Bar which is to be called "The Jumbo". This is now expected to be ready in mid-June and should alleviate the pressure on the Giant chairlift. However other facilities will be operating next weekend including the two chairlifts and the High Noon T-Bar. The Snowflake cafeteria at the top of the first chairlift will be operating as will the recently extended and refurbished Alpine Lodge cafeteria near the Mountain Road carparks. This latter building has been extended to treble its original size and now has double-glazed window walls to provide a condensation free, all-round view. Further finishing work still has to be done but facilities will be open to the public next weekend. Tufoa Skifields have spent over $1 million this year on improving and extending facilities both1 on the mountain and in their administration and information centre in Ohakune. The results will be an even better service to the public and will mean that queues should be avoided.
