Paper no problem
The Bulletin has sufficient stocks of paper in hand to last 3 months and another 3 month's stock is being held in reserve. This will enable us to print a 16-page weekly edition for the next 6 months irrespective of the continuing paper shortage resulting from the problems at Kawerau. And if the paper doesn't run to 16 pages each week, stocks will last considerably longer. The problems which have been experienced by other newspapers in obtaining newsprint during the Kawerau dispute has been avoided in our case because we will be using pre-cut sheet-fed paper rather than the reel-fed paper used by the larger newspapers with their rotary printing presses. There is at present no
shortage of stocks of precut paper and hopefully, now that the Kawerau dispute has been settled all newspapers will once again be able to get into full pror duction. The dispute at Kawerau has however highlighted the fact that "Think big" is not necessarily better . . . it is only the bigger newspapers which were facing the newsprint paper shortage problem. And that's why we don't intend increasing the circulation of the Bulletin beyond the Waimarino. By restricting the entire operation (editorial, advertising, typesetting, photography, printing etc) to the Ruapehu region we hope to avoid the effects of possible production and transport strikes elsewhere in the country.
