No less than 96 applications were received for the position of assistant at the Auckland Public Library The Chinese Government has ordered two cruisers from Lord Armstrong’s firm, and four torpedo boats from Germany. The Admiralty propose to establish depots for training carrier pigeons at all the naval ports. The service will be used chiefly for coastal defence. The Federal Timber Company's works at Balmain N. 8, W. with a large stock of timber, have been destroyed by fire. The damage is estimated at £6OOO. Mr John Mo r ley states that unless Great Britain induces the Powers to compel the cessation of Armenian outrages she would have to drink the bitterest cup of humiliation. In the course of the hearing of a charge the police stated there were at least one hundred foreign thieves, in Christchurch chiefly from Sydney Chief Detective Henderson says he never before knew sueha full congregation of the dangerous class in any place in the colony.
