McKINLEY’S ELECTION. Major McKinley’s majorities were ; Massachusetts, 168,000; New York, 259,879 ; Pennslyvsnia, 800,000 ; New York City, 19 656; I wa, 100,000. The voting in Washington was in favour of Mr Bryan, Later returns from the Southern States improved his position. New Yoria firms have ordered goodri from Europe since the election to the value of five million dollars. Stocks have risen points. It is stated that; a silver trust supplied the funds for Mr Bryan’s candidature, otherwise it would have collapsed. Mr Garratt R. Hobart, of New Jersey, the Republican candidate, has been elected Vice-president. Major McKinley’s plurality votes in Illinois were 125,000, Wis ccnsin 100,000, Ohio 60,000. Senator Brand has been re-elected. Some States have disputed McKinley’s majority, but it is safe, though a fractional reaction has taken place on the New York Exchange consequent on the statement. McKinley’s protection policy will be limited to the maintenance of the present rate of wages, and to enable employers of labour to compete with foreign articles The Times says America has earned the congratulations of the world, The German newspapers anticipate a moderate pro tectionist policy, and an improved state of trade. The Italian papers predict that America will exercise a stronger influence in foreign affairs. The French journals express a fear that Custom duties will be increased, McKinley, in his message thanking the people for returning him, indicate! that ho would detest anything like financial dishonour, or any attempt to bring about class haired. He would, he said, devote his energies in securing law, order, and justice. Bryan, in congratulating McKinley on his victory, said he accepted the decision of the people, McKin’ev’s majority is 170. There has been a remarkable revival of trade in all industries and stocks, and large orders have been sent forward for wool, cotton, and iron.
