MAROPIU ATHLETIC SPORTS.

The above annual sports which have caused a great deal of interest in this district for some time past, passed off very successfully at Maropiu ou Monday last, Prince of Birthday - The weather was beautifully fine, and with a nice cool breeze, and plenty of trees under which the pleasure seekers found plenty of shelter from the sun, nothing could be more desirable. Although there were only some 60 or 70 persons left Duraayille’for the scene of pleasure, yet the attendance on the ground was very good, numbering close on 500 persons. The racing track, though rather § narrow was in first class order. The events run were very closely contested, and therefore exciting. The Maropiu Cup was again won by G. Moros, this being the third time in succession. The Mile Race was won by “ Tony ” Keane, and the Quarter Mile and Half Mile by W. Dunn. Mr E. R. Ellis acted as starter and gave general satisfaction. The Maropiu Band played several fine selections and added greatly to the enjoyment of the day. The refreshment booths were under management of Mr Panapa and were well patronised. Mr Taia Netana worked very hard to ensure the success of the Sports, as also did the committee. The following are the winners of the several events. — Maiden. Race. W. Xainamu ... ... ... ... 1 J.
