FORT ALBERT.
[prom our own correspondent]
A Concert in aid of the Piano and Recreation funds eventuated on Friday night. A good programme of musical items was submitted but owing to the counter attraction the attendance was not as large as the object deserved. Mr Reid presided and in his opening remarks said he felt sorry there were not more present for we could not expect, our children to have a taste for the beautiful if the parents did not encourage it. The object of the gathering was to fence in the trees and shrubs planted alongside the Hall ground. The following programme was then gone through : —-Piano solo, Miss Booth ; glee, ‘ Cool grotto ’ Glee Club , song', ‘ Tired ’ (very good) Miss D- Bradbury ; duet, 4 Plow on thou, shining river ’ Miss Bradbury and Mr D. Beecroft ; glee, ‘To Spotted Snakes ’ Glee Club ; reading, ‘ Early rising ’ (splendid) Mr Reid ; medley song, Mr C Walker ; instrumental music, Messrs Webster and Nicholson ; glee, 1 Awake ’ Glee Club ; after which the farce ‘ Coaxed and Hoaxed ’ was staged and it was very good considering that it was the first time some of the performers had taken part in anything of the sort. The following ladies and gentlemen took part. — Mr Noodle, a young man in love, Mr C. Walker ; Mrs Broom,' a landlady, Miss Stevenion ; Conelious Tipp/a nice quiet young man, Mr R. Walker ; Mary, a servant who knew her way about, Miss Bradbury ; Mr Snooks, a cheesemonger, Mr Partington ; Miss Snooks, Miss Gubb. The Port Albert Cricket Club sent a team over to Warkworth on Saturday to play a match with that Club, but made a poor show against the bowling of their opponents, the scores being Port Albert 42 &19 for 7 wickets. Your Club need not be frightened of our lads. A meeting- of the Band of Hope was held on Tuesday, hut the rain which we required more than the meeting came and so the attendance was small. The short programme presented was good in quality and made up for the lack of quantity. All the talk here at present is about the Wairarapa disaster, and it is rather amusing to hear the different remarks as to what ought to have been done and how foolish of the captain to run at such a rate in a fog', but if he had not run into the rock and had got safely into Auckland some hours ahead of his timetable, he would have been presented with an illuminated address and not a word would have been said about the fog. That’s the the Christian f?) world all over ; when a man meets with an accident the verdict Ts always against him. It is time the Liberal government stepped in to stop this racing of steamers with passengers on hoard. The welcome rain has come and. none too soon as thing's were looking bad for the want of a drink.
