A Fatal Assault on Wifa. Mrs Sarah Pepler, wife of Noah Pepler, a Pukekohe settler, died last evening under the following peculiar oircumstances. On "Wednesday forenoon Dr. Carolan reported to Constable McGovern, Pukekohe that he had been for some time ia attendance on Mrs Sarah Pepler. Statements were made to him as to swelling and discolouration of her chest, which she alleged was the result of an assault committed on her by her husband on the Bth instant, and was the cause of her illness. The doctor informed the constable that be feared she would not live ever night. The constable, in bis report to Inspector Hickson, states he accompanied the doctor to see Mrs Pepler and he saw marks which she alleged her husband had caused The constable arrested Neab Pepler on a charge of assault on his wife with intent to do grievous bodily harm. Accused was taken before the Pukehohu bench and remanded foreight days. Yesterday he was brought to Auckland and lodged in Mt. Eden Gaol. The accused is stated by himself to be about ninety years of age. Ths Wairarapa Enquiry Mr North croft S.M, and Captains Clayton and Andrew, magistrates and nautical assessors in the Wairarapa wreck enquiry will leave this evening by the s.s.
