MOTUKARAKA

(From Our Own Correspondent.) As the weather has so far changed that those living in these outlying settlements can again get about we have re-commeuced our monthly meetings of the Band of Hope. Our second meeting was held last Friday, when a very enjoyable evening- was spent. Last Thursday we had a visit from two Elders of the Mormon Church, who held a meeting in the schoolroom in the evening. The attendance was very good, and I noticed some there who are now never seen at any of our Sunday services. As some about here have turned to the Boorish Church, others may think of be com in oMormons ; it would certainly be better than no religion at all. x understand the Elders are to visit the Wairoa district shortly.

Some of our road contractors have finished for the present, but expect to be 1 at. it ’ again before long. This part of the country is sadly in want of good roads to take the place of our present mud tracks.

Planting and bush-falling is now the order of the day, when the weather permits, for we are now having one of those sudden changes from fine and dry to violent squalls with heavy rain A few of our vocalists, who some time ao-o gave the Service of Song ‘ Her Only Son,’ are again practising, and they intend to favour the ifJawene residents wit a treat very shortly. An application has been made to the School Committee for the use of the schoolroom in connection with a Mutual Improvement Class. The first meeting was to be held last evening but. I have not heard how they got on as vet. so must defer any account until my next letter
