MAUNGATUROTO.

[from our own correspondent] Christmas is drawing near once more, and with it we shall no doubt have the usual picnics, family gatherings etc., as well as the good wishes of our friends from far and near The holiday times pass awny very quietly as a rule, hut perhaps we enjoy ourselves none the less for that. We have been having some nice fine weather lately which has dried our roads and gladdened the hearts of our farmers, haymakers especially ; although we have had a very wet spring and early summer I think most of the crops as a rule are good. The racing people are busy now preparing the course for that all important event (the race meeting) which takes place on the 27th inst, I hear there are a good number of entries, as many as ten for the Maungatufoto Cup which is I suppose the principal race of the day. Our Agricultural Association have their posters in circulation, ard it is to be hoped that the Committee will be as energetic as they were last year in endeavouring to make the Show a success, I have been fold that the Taparoa people look upon our Society as a rival one ; I am sorry for that for such is not the case with us, our object is to work in the interests, and for the advancement of the Agricultural and Pastoral pursuits of the country and not of Maungaturoto o.nly, and if Paparoa can get up a better Show than we can, we shall not pull a long face over that. Our motto is “ Advance the agricultural, pastoral and industrial pursuits of New Zealand. The contractor for the repairing of the Great North Road is making good progress with the work, and we hope the Council will try to prevent that road being ruined again with the timber hauling. I notice several teams getting ready for the roads now they are drying up.

In closing I will ask the Editor’s permission to be allowed to wish the readers of the Bell a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
