THE FIRST LADY MAYOR.

Mrs Yates, at her installation as Mayor of Onehuuga, said it was not for the position that she had sought the honour of Mayor, she said, but because it had been found impossible to get a man to carry out the duties as she was prepared to carry them out. It might appear egotistical for her to say so, but it was nevertheless the case. Referring to the resignation of the councillors, Mrs Yates said she did not in anyway connect it with her appointment. She then spoke with a pardonable ring of pride in her voice of the honor which had been bestowed on her. She was the first lady Mayor in the British dominions, she said. In conclusion she said that the affairs of the borough had been carried on in a most unsatisfactory- manner tor the last 17 years under the leadership of men, and now it was to be seen whether with a woman at their head there would be any change of importance.
