CONCERT AND DANCE AT MARERETU.

A very successful concert and dance was held in the School on Thursday last in aid ©f funds for a play shed for the children attending the Sctiool There was not so large an .attendance as was expected owing to the threatening state of the weather. Mr [Robert McCarroll occupied the chair. An instrumental selection by Mr H C Nutsford opened the proceedings, and was well received being given in that gentleman’s talented style. The next item was a song ‘ The Fisher Boy,’ by Miss M. Me Carroll and was indeed a treat, This young lady has a nice voice, and has a knack of giving expression and taste to the piece she is rendering. This was followed by a duet ‘ Convent Bel’s ’ by Mrs Jenkins and Miss H. Spick, which was well received. Mr W. Hook of Paparoa, then favoured with a violin solo. This was beautifully executed, ana was a treat to lovers of music and an encore was demanded, A song, ‘ The Old, Old Song ’ by Miss [Nutsfcrd was well rendered. Mr IT, Symes of Whangiifei then took the stage and fairly took the°house? by storm with bis comic gong 4 I was in It J .and an encore was demanded, and to al ar e tempest he responded with Sister Mary Walks Like This. After an interval of ten minutes the second part of the programme was opened by a song, * Golden Love ’ by Miss Nutsford which was followed by a duet by Mrs Jenkins and Miss Spick ; both these items were well given. Mr G, W. Heslop then came to the front with a comic song 1 Oh, It’s Grand to be a Bobby ’ and in response to an encore he gave the popular comic song ‘ Rather ’ with telling effect. Miss McCarroll then gave us another song in pretty style. Mr H. Symes was called upon again and gave 4 The Niggers From the South,’ and in response to an encore he gave another comic song, ‘ The Angles Have Called Him Away.’ This concluded the programme. Mr Jenkins, chairman of the School Committee, moved a hearty vote of thanks to all who had taken part in the entertainment and said great credit was due to Mr Symes who had come all the way from Whangarei, The building was cleared for dancing which was kept up with vigor till daylight did appear.
