FEVER AMONG THE NATIVES.
Our Alaropiu correspondent writes : The angel of death has been busy amongst the natives in the district of late. Daring the last fortnight four have died, and sever d more are bent on following their example. The Opanaki settlement has Bufered most there being some sort of fever prevalent there. It is stated by some to be a form of Typhus or Typhoid, but I think it is more probable to De a low fever of some kind The medical officer of the district has visited the sufferers and he would have surely taken stringent measures had it been a dangerous scourge such as Typhoid fever. Fever of some kind it most assuredly is, yet in spite of all warnings the Natives persist in dousing the sufferers in the creek. There is a deal of the ! fatalist about the Maoris and they argue that if they are to die, they will die and once a native makes up his mind to die, no power on earth could prevent him from carrying out his intention.
