R. M. COURT, DARGAVILLE.
(Before Messrs T« Webb and A. E. Harding, J’e.P.) A sitting of this Court was held a fort night since but has hitherto slipped our notice, owing probably to election excite ment, The proceedings were somewhat of a special character so we give them now. PROHIBITION ORDER, A man in the employ of Mr Rogers of the Kaihu hotel applied for a prohibition order against himself Mr Rogers said it was use’ess for him to try and keep the man sober white he could get all he asked for at the other hotel,—The order was granted. Qustavus VicTi was charged under the Medical Practitioners Act with having practised as a medical man, he not being duly licensed. Defendant pleaded not guilty. Thomas Rogers, R, M. Clark, J, Aikin, and Constable Scott gave eyidenee. A copy of a notice was produced, announcing that Dr Vich had come to reside in the neighbourhood. Similar notices had been
left at Fitness’s and Clark’s stores. Evidence wss also given that defendant had professionally attended oa the child of Mr Rogers as also on one of Mr Eves’ children. Accused had also given evidence at an inquest that he was a duly qualified medical man M.F.C. of Sweden, equal to F R.C.S. in England Defendant made a lengtby and ingenious defence and said he was duly qualified as a massager under the massage treatment ; he had never claimed to be an M.D. and the term doctor in its origin merely meant teacher. He was a native of Sweden. The Bench considered ths offence proved and fined the defendant £2 and costs. Richard Johnson was charged with stealing a tent, lamp, and other articles. Ho pleaded guilty. In answer to the Bench prisoner said he was 17 years of age, and that he had no means of paying a fine There were no previous convictions against the prisoner and the Bench expressed an unwillingness to send such a youth to gaol, but felt coinpelleh to protect the public. Sentenced to two month’s imprisonment with hard labour.
