ARATAPU WESLEYAN SOIREE.
The annual Soiree and concert in connection with the Wesleyan Church at Aratapu was held on 23rd November. The ladies who, as a Committee undertook to carry out the whole affair from beginning to end, (except the concert programme, which was under the management of Mr A. Campbell, choir-master) are to be congratulated on the successful issue of their
work. The Hall was neatly decorated, fch * tables well and bountifully spread and thos who sat down to tea were numerous and contented: people were present from all parts of the river We have only heard two unfavourable criticisms and we give them for what they are worth ; —first, that the young men who should be to the front on such occasions were only conspicuous by their absence, and second that the sandwiches were not the genuine ham sandwich so dear to many but a cheaper substitute not at all in popular favour. The Conceit was also an immense success, many who were not present at tea came in so that the Hall was packed as full as could be, seats being placed in the aisle and every other available place. The programme was a very meritorious one and contained several choice pieces. Miss Rimmer, who had been induced to come from Auckland for the occasion, contributed greatly to the success of the whole; she sang “ Don’t Tell Mother ” and the “ Crystal Sea ” and as encores “ There’s No One Like Mother To Me ” and another. Mrs M. Harding upheld her reputation as a great local favorite in the “ Ivory Gate ” and another. The Choir sang two anthems and a glee all of which were well given and much enjoyed. Mr G. Elliott quite excelled himself in reciting “ Curfew Must Not Ring Tonight.” Mr Webster sang “ Death of Nelson ” and another with his well-known ability. The quartette by Messrs French, Campbell, Nield and Stephens was well rendered. Misses E. Wilson and G, Stallworthy also gave a vocal duet “Music Sweet Shall Flow Tonight.” Several other ladies and gentlemen assisted in making the concert a real treat. The takings at the door amounted to £l3 odd, and the total receipts, we are informed, reached about £29. Tbe Committee desire to return their sincere thanks to all who assisted in carrying through the annua! celebration so successfully.
