PAPAROA.
[from our owx correspondent] At the Wesleyan Anniversary the report read by the Circuit minister showed that the amount raised for carrying on the work of God in this circuit has for the past three years showed a yearly increase, 'aim sum subscribed for foreign missions is also much larger, being for this year £4 4s Id, liaised also for Home Missions about £lO, upwards of £GO has also been subscribed for the Trust fund during the year, Politics are in the air, and a warm interest is being taken m the Election. Mr R. Thompson addressed a large meeting in the Hall on Tuesday evening last. At the close, a vote of confidence in the candidate was carried by a majority of only 8 votes Mr Thompson strongly defended the Government Liquor Bill, and reviewed the legislation of the past session, A number of persons of professed temperance principles here are supporting Mr Thompson ; how they reconcile this action to their consciences it is hard to understand. Mr J ames Harrison gave his second political address on the 23rd November, Again there was a largely attended meeting. Mr Harrison took the opportunity of refuting some misleading statements which had been circulated by bis opponents as to his policy and personal actions, Some of these do not certainly do Mr Thompson any credit. Mr Harrison declared himself in favour of the Referendum, and also of elective J, P’s. It is however, perhaps hardly wise to trespass on your space now with the utterances of either of the candidates, as before these lines are in print the die will be cast, and the first New Zealand Parliament elected under the universal suffrage will be an accomplished tact. The Paid Horticultural and Industrial Show took place on Wednesday last, and was a great success, being largely attended. Mrs Jas. Rintoul, who has for ‘some time lain in a critical state passed away on Saturday last, 25th ult, aged 24 years, Decea'sed leaves a husband with three young children to mourn their loss. Much genuine sympathy is felt for the bereaved ones, with the young wife and mother cut down in the flower of youth. The funeral took place on Monday the 27th in the Anglican Cemetery, Eev. J 5 J. Mather reading the burial service.
