MAUNGATUROTO.

(From our own Correspondent)

Never since the form ation of this settlement have the residents taken so great an interest in political matters, both local and general, as they are doing at the present time . Every ratepayer and elector seems eager to record his vote, which shows that the past lethargy is now (and we will hope for ever) passing off and that the people in the north are becoming alive to the fact that they mast make themselves heard, and their power felt, in order to obtain in the future a fair share oi the country’s revenue.

We 1 lave not yet had the pleasure of meeting either of the two candidates for this (the Waitamata) electorate but I be lieve we are to see and hear them during the coining week. The County elections are now over, the excitement in this district was very great for a few days before, and particularly on the Bth iust., the day of the election. The contest for Councillor for this the Wairau Billing was a very keen one, but when the numbers were turned up, Mr W. Chadwin Jun, was declared elected by a substantial majority. Sheep shearing is now in full swing but the weather has broken again today, which will retard operations for a time, as rain is falling heavily, All kinds of vegetation are now' growing fast and the country looks fresh and green The Foresters’ Ball is to take place this day week, the first hop of the season in this district.
