POLICE COURT, ARATAPU.

Saturday. (Before Messrs T. Webb and M. Harding J’s.P.) John Andrews was charged with stealing a blanket from the Pahi hotel on 26th October. Constable Abrams telegraphed to Constable Scott and the latter arrested the prisoner on Friday morning. Two Justices could not be brought together on Friday so prisoner had to remain in custody till Saturday. Prisoner pleaded ‘ Guilty,’ and said he was under the influence of drink and did not know what he was doing. He said that the publican had seen him jumping out of a window and his actions had been described to himself as these of a madman. Constable Scott handed in a telegram from Constable Abrams to the effect that prisoner was slightly under the influence of liquor when he stole the blanket. It was the first time the prisoner had been in the hands of the police, and the Bench warned him of the evil effects of drink, and reminded prisoner how painful it must be to his mother to have a son in prison, also how bad it must be for his wife and children, and they hoped this would be a warning to him for the future. They would not send him to gaol for the first offence but would impose s fine of £3 and costs 7s, or in default one month’s imprisonment. Prisoner said he hoped the next drink he took would poison him.
