OUR NEWS LETTER.
The immigration and emigration returns for the colony for August show the arrivals to have been 1,761, and the departures 860. The arrivals were:—From the United Kingdom, 349 ; Queensland, 5, New South Wales, 814 ; Victoria., 469 ; Tasmania, 79 ; other places, 45 ; total, 1,761. The departures were:—To the United Kingdom, 74 ; New South Wales, 425 ; Victoria, 207 ; Tasmania, 60 ; other places, 95. Total 860. During the month 20 Chinese arrived and 26 departed. The postal authorities of New South Wales are enforcing the law prohibiting delivery of letters to lottery and sweep promoters. In consequence a large number of letters addressed to ‘ Tattersalls ’ and cont aining hundreds of pounds have recently been returned to the Dead Letter Office in New Zealand. The full list of tbeprohibited names is :—George Adams Adam Bede, Star, Henry T. Cosgrove, Tattersall, Confidence, M. G. Gallar, H. Alexander, Manager, E. J. Deßomford.
