FOOTBALL. ARATAPU II v. KOPURU 11. A lot of interest centred in this match and both teams trained well in hope of victory. Kopu.ru II had one win to their credit and a draw would have given them the possession of the Mi ch Iso Challenge Cup. The ground was very wet and dirty, but for all this there were about 200 on the field including some 20 or 30 ladies. The game was a noisy, rough and tumble in which the finer points of football were overlooked in excited struggles for the goal line. Plav was for the most part in the Kopuru half and the r ed and blacks had decidedly the best of it, but they' played with very little head and only just managed to score a win six minutes beiore time was called. The events ®f the game were seven free kicks for Kopuru, and two for Aratapu; Masefield ran over the line from the 2o and grounded the ball but was called back ; Lendrum ran to within a foot of the line where he was collared and a scrum was ordered five yards back; Jamieson get oyer goal line but foolishly ran on to touch in goal; Bartley, Sullivan, Smith and another were placed hors de combat for short spells; Jamieson again got into touch in goal, and a tuird time got to the corner flag but was this time thrown out by Campbell; Lendrum secured the ball from a loose pack on Kopuru line and scared the only try; Walker’s attempt at g-eal was weak’; the spectators were too boisterous; the players full of appeals, and the referee was scarcely' up to the rules; his decisions were often called in question, but he bore the discourteous treatment of spectators in a good spirit. Hooting- is not gentlemanly and can do no good. Of the piay T ers on the Kopuru side Hockey, Smith and Fowler in the forwards and Lowrie, Campbell and Davern in Hie backs were the pick; of the red and blacks Alcock, Newman and Harrison in the forwards and Lendrum, Jamieson and Masefield of the backs were about the best. A meeting 0 f the Wairoa Rugby Union is to be held on Monday evening next when the claims of the Kopuru and Aratapu Clubs to wins by default against the np-river teams will be considered, and dates fixed for the matches necessary to complete the programme. Players who still hold their Representative jerseys are requested to return them to the Secretary of the Union. Another struggle is to take place tomorrow afternoon between the Kopuru and Aratapu Clubs. The teams are as follows Kopuru ji. C. hull-back J. Johnston; three-quarter backs Elliott, A. Johnston and Cox; half-backs ... L wrio and W. Smith ; forwards yv-eg.m, A. g,- rp. ,-,-idC Molluy, x..
