MATING ANTI I BLITHE ROAD, Mr Houston has been stirring the powers in reference to the b.id state of the Mang-anui Bluff road and has received the following reply from the Surveyor General’s office : —‘ With reference to your letter of 3rd instant, on the subject of the present condition of a portion of the abovementioned road, I am now directed by the Minister of Lands to inform you that the road was put into repair but that droves of cattle from Hokianga have again damaged it Instructions have, however, been issued to do what the season will allow in further repairs*’ A return laid on the table of (ho House on the subject of railway and road construction on the co-operative principle, shows the followingparticulars —There have been Too men employed on railway works, their earnings ranging- from 3/1 to 21/4 per day. 44- were employed on road works, their earnings being- 8/9 to 9/9 pier day. It is explained in a foot-note that payment of 21/4 per day, which was mode to mer. on the Paeroa-Te Aroha railway, was not actuallyearned in one day, but coinpirised money paid to make up for a formor-undcr payment. The average earnings of the men on that job were 8/4 per day,
