KAIHU CLIPPINGS.

[Bt

OLD KAIHU.]

There has been a good deal of controversy lately as to who was to blame for that illegal expenditure on the Dargaville Tangitiroria Road. The following extract from a letter addressed to the Chairman of the County by a gentleman resident in the township and at that time a Cemncillor will perhaps throw some light on the subject. Auckland 23rd April 1887 To Chairman Hobson County Council TeKopuru Dear Sir, —I have interviewed Mr Kensington (in the absence of Mr Smith) re the Dargaville-Tangiteroria Road with satisfactory results so far. The Department will endeavour to utilize Harding’s plan so as to enable a proclamation to be issued by the Governor under the Native Lands Act (not the Public Works Act) taking the read. A compilation is now being made from Harding’s plan for the purpose. To this will be added the portion which Baber surveyed. Indeed, Mr Kensington is so satisfied that this can be done that he advises us to go on with the construction of the bridges and culverts at once, leaving the making of the bridle track to stand over till the spring. May I ask you to move the Council to do this at the next meeting.—Yours faithfully. “ We (that is D Senr.) prefer to take the statement of D—■ — Junior on the point,” (very natural of course) what about the other Councillors ? I see in the Dargaville page in the Observer they have given us the old lady that those wicked storekeepers did to death, but what about the goed old nun that died—Oh, tell us J. M. D. where he is buried that we may shed a tear on his grave and erect a monument ta the memory of this martyr to monopoly with appropriate verses by poet Somers carved thereon. Some people say the geod old man was a myth, a fiction and that there was ‘ never no such pusson ’ but that can’t be, truthful J. has sworn te him.
