FOOTBALL .

The first match of the New Zealand team in Australia was played at Paramatta on June 29th, the opposing team being chosen from the players of that district. Our boys scored a win by 8 points to nil. Ellison and Lambie secured tries ; Ellison converted one of them. The result is considered very satisfactory for the winners as they had only arrived from sea the same morning. Fifteen members of the City 111 team played a match with the Otahuhu F. C. against the expressed wish of the Rugby Union and all that took part in the match have been suspended pending the pleasure of the Union Committee. J. Cole is evidently a travelling footballer. He was this season registered with the Northern Wairoa Union as a member of the Kopuru F. C. ; he has been playing with the City Club under the Auckland Union, and now he has been registered as a member of the Huntly F. C. under the Waikato Union. A good game was played in Mr Webb’s paddeck last Saturday between the Probables and Possibles although some of those chosen failed to put in an appearance, and the Juniors refused to play with the Possibles ; and a good stand was made by the latter although the game resulted in a win for the Probables by 6 points to nil. The tries were got by Len Kitching, Smith, and Neil. O’Brien at full-back was not at home and it was scarcely to be expected that he would be. A. Smith was very safe in what he had to do. T. Elliott has improved wonderfully this season and played a splendid game throughout. A. Johnston picked up smartly and kicked well; he promises to be something good, but he must learn how to act in face of an opponents’ rush. Len Kitching was there and in good form, his help cannot be spared from a Wairoa rep. team. Lionel Kitching is coming on, his following up and collaring were immense. Josh will be proud of him yet. Neil as a back is far from rep. form, perhaps he may]] do better as a forward tomorrow. F. Barker played a dashing game and is good enough for Potter’s paddock. H. Lowrie is smart and uses his head well. C. aud F. Molloy were good, the former being rather the better on Saturday. He is in good fettle but must be a bit more care • ful of offside. Phelan, Bonella, Main and Nield may also be commended for their good work on Saturday.

Tomorrow afternoon the third Representative practice match will be played in Mr Webb’s paddock and all players chosen are requested to attend. The teams chosen are as follows :

Probables. —Messrs A. Smith full-back ; T. Elliot L , A. Johnston and Butland threequarters ; Len Kitching, H. Lowrie and Lio. Kitching halves: F. Barker, C. and F. Molloy Poland, E. Phelan, T. Keane, Fiavell and J. N»ill forwards. Possibles. —G. Campbell full-back ; J. Smith, Hammond and O’Brien threequarters ; W. Smith, Main and Nolan halves ; Yeale, Nelson, Gollcp, Harkness, Bonella, G. Nield, Lee and Keegan forwards. Emergencies.—Backs, F. Walker aud Morrison. Forwards, Legg®, Cunningham and D. Campbell. The Aratapu II team held a meeting in the Band of Hope room on Wednesday evening and appointed Mr J. O’Neill captain, MrF. H. Walker vice-captain, and these two gentlemen with Mr J no. Lindsay as Selection Committee. Mr T. Nield was deputed to apply to the Club Committee for a ball for the use of the Juniors. The team decided to bold a practice on Saturday next when the Aratapu II will play All Comers. It was decided to invite the Pahi Club over and play the team at Aratapu as the Juniors visited Pabi last season. Last week two matches were played at Waimamuku. Waima v. Omanaia, Waima 40 points Omania 7 points. Whiranaki v. Waimamuku. Waimamuku 4 points Whiranaki nii, - - T ~ , . ~ The Football match New Zealand v. New South Wales, played in Sydney on Saturday last attracted an attendance of 15,000 people. Our Island boys were victorious by 17 points to S. Lambie, Jervis, Bayley, Gage and Ellison each secured a try and the latter converted one. For New South Wales Hiddlestone and Surrnan got a try each and one of them was converted by Cobb. This is New Zealand’s fourth victory over |New South Wales. The probability is that the N. Z. team will return by way of Auckland, and play a Northern representative team before disbanding. The N- Z. team played eighteen N. S. Wales juniors on Tuesday and scored a win by 19 points to nil. Apart from the fact that the Juniors were playing three extra men, the game was expected to t e one of the hottest the New Zealanders woijld have to

play, but these anticipations were all upset, as the local men were over-matched in every department. The match Wairoa v. Auckland is expected to come off on August 12th or August 19th, but no certain information has yet been received. A meeting of theJWairoa Rugby Union is called for Wednesday evening and a full attendance is asked for. The business of the evening will be the arrangement of the second round of fixtures, and other matters of importance. Clubs must hold themselves in readiness to resume Cup matches on the following Saturday. Tim O’Connor who has repeatedly captained Auckland’s reps was married on Thursday. When Auckland met the Englishmen some years ago Mr Dickey promised to remember Air O’Connor when he got married if he led his team to victory. This he did and Air Dickey, true to his promise, has presented Mr O’Connor with a magnificent assortment of cutlery valued at about £ls.
