MARERETU.
(prom ottr own correspondent). The want of a Justice of the Peace in this district has been much felt for some time past. Recognising the requirement the powers that be have appointed John Me Carroll, Esq., of Mareretu, a Justice of the Peace. Hitherto when the signature ©f a J.P. was required to any document the people had to travel miles in quest of one of the great unpaid, which are a rara avis in these parts. I feel confident Mr McCarroll’s appointment will be a popular one ; he is a gentleman who is qualified in every respect for the position. Mr McCarroll is a North of Ireland man, being born in Ballymena, Belfast. He came to New Zealand in 1884 for the benefit of his health and opened business in Auckland, but finding town life did not suit him he decided to try the country, and came to Mareretu and oast his lot in with the pioneer settlers here. Since his advent here he has passed through all the vicissitudes of a pioneer settler’s life, but by indomitable pluck and perseverance he ha,s established for himself and family a comfortable and remunerative homestead, and may now be numbered amongst our most successful settlers.
