FOOTBALL.
The trial match N. Z. reps v. a picked fifteen, played at Wellington was won by the reps t>3' 7 points to 4. Jervis and AVynyard were the scorers. The team left for Sydney last week. The Kopuru II claim a win against Dargaville II as the latter team failed to put in an appearance on the field last Saturday. The up-river Clubs cannot agree to play on a Wednesday, and theyjdesire the Union to fix an early Saturday for their first match. The weather last Saturday was very much against the game and several of the Possibles and Probables did not turn up for practice. To-morrow perhaps will be more favourable. Mr E. Bassett has kindly sent us the players Mo=on for the POSSIBLES —PROBABLE S match tc be played in Mr Webb’s paddock tomorrow afternoon ; kick off at three sharp. Probables : Fullback, A. Smith ; threequarters, Butland, G. Campbell, Elliott ; halves, Len Kitchiny, H. Lowrie, J. Neill; forwards, Woollams, Keane, Bonella, Elavcll, G. Molloy, F, Molloy, Keegan E Phelan. Possibles : Fullback, AY. O’Brien ; threequarters, Hammond, A. Johnson, Lio Kitching ; halves, AY. Smith, Nolan, T. Main ; forwards, Poland, Barker, Gollop, Lee, Veale, Nelson, Harkness, Logge. Emergencies, J. Smith, Blewdan, D. Campbell, and Hope. AVe do not agree with the teams as chosen if they have been picked according to supposed merit, but as the picking is only a preliminary one our criticisms may well be held over. There are however some not named at all who should not be overlooked in a future selection of thirty odd names. Geo. Nield, F. C. Walker, P. Matthews, and Fowler are some of these. A practice match was played on the Darga vi le ground on Saturday when Messrs G. Nield, A. Johnston, Fowler, and Main showed about the best form.
“ A Passenger ” writes complaining of the steamer being detained at Dargaville so long after the conclusion of the game, and thinks the Union should not allow its steamer to be delayed to enable one who has next election in view to shout for players. Mr B. Mitchelsou desires his Challenge Cup to be played for until the years engraved upon it rue out, after which time it is to be the property of the Club which has won it the oftenest, and in case of a tie the Club which has scored the most points to take it. Football rules sixpence each at Aratapu. Last Saturday’s Auckland matches resulted in Parnell defeating Newtown by 14 points to 4 ; Grafton defeating City 4 points to 2, and Ponsonby heading Suburbs by 5 points to 2‘ Parnell now leads for the Senior Championship. The New Zealand footballers landed in Sydney on AVeduesday. The trip was a pleasantone though high seas were encountered, The men are in good condition.
