IN MEMORIAM.

SIB WILLIAM FOX Another hero on fife’s battle-field, Another worker in the cause of right, Lays down the weapons he no more may wield, And proves as true in death as in the fight. Not where the awful din of war arose O’er slaughtered men, and pillaged homes, fought he ; Yet his rich trophies, won from stubborn foes, Adorn the homes where erstwhile slaves are free.

His was the noble heart that knew not fear, That braved the shafts of malice, and of scorn ; And his the willing hand that wiped the tear Of sorrow from the cheeks of the forlorn. And in the conflict with our ruthless foe, When many shunned the battle, he stood forth A leader o’er the ranks of those who shew By loyal deeds their knowledge of his worth. We miss the grand old veteran to-day, The well-known form strange hands have laid to rest; Yet bowing to God’s sovereign will we say “ ’Twas His good pleasure, and He knoweth best.” And two fond hearts, that to each other gave The love that ripened as the years -went by, Are re-united, and beyond the grave Haye found the home where friendships never die. So let us live, unselfish, firm, and true, So let us labour, steadfast to the end So let us die, with heaven in our view, And cheered by Him who proves man s dearest Friend. E, S. Husband. Te Kopuru, 28th June 1593.
