Auckland, Friday, noon. Home Rule Bill. Irish members were much irritated at Premier’s acceptance of amendment including aliens amongst the list of subjects exempted from legislation by Irish Parliament, and therefore voted against the Government on the question, as also did seventy radicals. The amendment was however carried. Collision in Sydney Harbour. The collier Tanior collided with a North Shore ferry steamer this evening and the latter was cut down to the water line, and had to be beached to prevent sinking. Considerable excitement prevailed among the passengers on board the ferry steamer, but fortunately no one was injured. South Australia Depressed. The Governor opened Parliament in person. The speech from the throne stated that owing to the financial crisis it was necessary to resort to legislation to relieve depositors in suspended Banks. Also in consequence of the Broken Hill strike reducing revenue etc., and to a small harvest yield, the revenue would not meet expenditure Salaries of civil servants would be reduced, and measures would be introduced offering facilities for land settlement.
England in Egypt. The Paris “ Figaro ” after making special enquiries as to the position of affairs in Egypt, admits a benefit has been conferred by British administration from every point of view. Their special Commissioner adds that the cry of “ Egypt for the Egyptians” is Utopian, and that the British have exercised neither tyranny nor oppression. Suicide in AucklandMiss Catherine Bakewell, youngest daughter of Dr. R. H. Bakewell, the wellknown Auckland physician, took a quantity of poison known as “ Rough on Rats ” and died shortly afterwards.
