James 11., when Duke of York, made a visit to Milton out of curiosity. In the course of conversation the Duke said to the poet that he thought his blindness was a judgment upon him because he had written against Charles 1., the Duke’s father. Milton replied: ‘lf your Highness thinks that misfortunes are the indexes of the wrath of heaven, what must you think of your father’s tragic end ? I have only lost my eyes. He lost his head ’
