THE COMING ELECTION
ANOTHER GRAB AT THE MONEY. The “Northern Luminary” says: “The “ bold front ” bearing the jovial face of J. M. Dargaville, Esq., was to he seen at the Kaikohe races and athletic gathering on Monday and Tuesday last, sporting
around - . • in seven! ev - ~t h of his visit was mainly a . ie,v feel the pulses ” of thef community at large, and several friends in particular anent the coming election. Mr Dargaville informs us openly, that the Northern Wairoa portion of the Bay of Islands electorate only intends to put one man in the field to contest the election for this district, and that man will be himself, if he can meet with any encouragement at all from the Bay County. Mr Dargaville admits that he was late in comingforward at last election, and is therefore determined not to be behind the times in future should he consent to ask the people up here for their vote and confidence. As there is—according- tc the “Payment of Members Bill ” now in force—the handsome sum of £720 for each Parliament of three years, or £4 12s 3JI per week, with travelling allowances and other perquisites, the honourable position, devoid of what one may boast or promise to do for one’s constituency, is worth trying and fighting hard for. The nice little income for three years, with the possibility of re-election later on, payable by Government cheque monthly, is worth trying for, and no doubt there will be found, when the proper time arrives, more candidates then members required for all the constituencies in the colony- Anyhow, we ask the question seriously! “Is the Bay of Islands County—the LARGEST and MOST populous of any in the whole electorate—going to tamely lie low, and submit to be wooed by non-local men ? We merely ask the question. Because if the Bay electors think of producing a man to their own liking, it is time he were brought forward.” The Hokianga correspondent of the same paper says Politics in the air already, Mr Dargaville being here on the warpath, as urbane and smiling as ever. I shall have something to say later on. 7 ’ ‘ Our Own ’ correspondent at Waimate North says “ Friend Dargaville sent me a special message that he is a candidate,—he is telling the people here that he will get a block vote on the 'Wairoa.”
