MAROPIU.

[From our own Correspondent ] ‘ Better late than never.’ After two and a half years of complete silence and total neglect, Mr Houston M.H.R is about to pay his Hobson constituents a visit and—l presume—give them an account of his stewardship. Has our member’s conscience at last troubled him, or is it with a view to the next election that lie is now about to visit the Hobson County ? for I see that he has announced his intention oiboonteG - ing the Bay electorate at the forthcoming election. Not a doubt of it. Once elect a gentlemau to the position of an M.H.R. and though ever and anon he tells his constituents that the position is a difficult one, ‘that all is not gold that glitters,’ he seldom retires without a struggle. Now Mr Houston in your meanderings don’t forget to pay Maropiu a visit. We want to see what a real live M.H.R is like—never saw one here yet I think—and we may find that you are a ‘ jolly good fellow ’ after all, and support your candidature. There must I think be something wrong with Maropiu, by the way political gentleman in general avoid it. At the last election only one of the four candidates addressed a meeting at Maropiu. And yet surely this is not such an insignificant place to deserve such treatment, At the last election there were eighty-one votes polled here—the present member got the one ; and I could mention places where all four candidates vented their eloquence snd there were not half —or anything like half—the votes polled. So don’t forget us please gentlemen in future. Mr Dash informs us that he will not contest the election against the sitting member. Wise man Dash. The interests of the great Liberal (?) (make a big note of interrogation, please MiEditor) party must not be jeopardised by running two candidates of the same colour. There has been another reason whispered to me why Dash is a wise man- but I leave my readers to guess it. Truly there is a glorious future before us. The Liberal Society of Dunedin, the head and foundation of the so-called Liberal party in this colony, has recently issued its electoral manifesto, putting forth the various aims and objects of the Society. One of the planks in their platform reads something to this effect : ‘ The State to find work for all the loafers—’ no. I’ll put it as it is written : • The State to find employment for all who cannot find it for themselves,’ etc. Very nice I’m sure, but I would like to point out that there are numbers who can never find work, or they say so, while there’s plenty to do around them. And I should like to know what sort of work these unemployed are to be put to ? Are tradesmen to be put to their trades, merchants to business etc., or are they all to be set at whatever is on the go? And if there is no work which is wanted done, I presume the Government must make work, even if they have to borrow a million or two ? Another loan in view, boys. Send for Vogel. One thing is certain that if the Government accept this edict there will soon be an * unemployed ’ rush from all parts of the world to this Paradise for the careless spendthrift, this home for the lazy vagabonds.
