THE CHIT IOOR IN EAVY WEATHER The well-known barquentine Chittoor, which arrived at Melbourne on the 2oth ult. from Kaipara with timber, had a very stormy passage across. She sailed on the 7th with light N.E. winds and hazy weather. On the 9th tho wind blew with hurricane force and was accompanied by a teritfic sea, which broke right over the vessel. The wind constantly changed from 13.N.E. to S., rendering it impossible for tiie vessel to run, and she was accordingly hove to on tiie starboard tack. The vessel laboured heavily all night and escaped injury until 7 a in on tho 10th ultimo, when a heavy sea fell on board, starting the bulwarks, splitting the stanchions, flooding the cabins and forecastle, anti carrying everything moveable overboard. All hands were at once on deck, and the vessel was got before the wind and kept running under bare poles, while the crew jettisoned the portion of the deck cargo which had got adrift. The other cargo was mada secure and all hands were congratulating themselves on having made the vessel snug, when a leak was reported and the men had to man the pumps. Towards evening on the 11th the weather moderated and light winds were had until 21st ultimo, when a fresh gale from the southward was had This was followed by calms and light airs to Cape Howe, and afterwards moderate to port. Mr Cadman has instructed his solicitor to issue a writ for libel against Mr W. L Rees, in connection with statements made by the latter reflecting on Mr Cadman. The damages to be claimed are £I,OOO. The Czar was considerably startled upon looking- at hife private album, by finding within a signed photograph of a Nihilist who was recently executed At the annual meeting of the North Kaipara Agricultural Society, held at Paparoa on April Ist, the balance-sheet showed that the total receipts for tbs year had been £ll3. There was a credit baianoe of ;on band. A discussion took place as to supplying beer to judges afc the Show, and on tho motion of the- Rev. Mr J. J. Mather it was decided ‘ That no intoxicating drinks be provided next year/ The obvious conclusion is a trifle 6 rough * on the judges,
