Only a fortnight ago we called attention to the deck-loads carried by timber-carry-ing vessels and expressed the opinion that probably these had something to do with the large percentage of losses among such vessels. We then said that if anylives had been saved from the Jthree wrecks we referred to, we would probably have had convincing testimony of the potent part these deck loads played in the destruction of the vessels and consequent less of life. Already as may be seen under the heading of “ Current News ” in another column, we have strong evidence in support of our supposition.
Captain McKenzie of the Eillan Donan in his last trip over experienced very severe weather and part ot his deck cargo got loose, but was again secured. And again in the wreck of the little steamer Ruby the deck cargo played an important part, insomuch that it closed the door of the cabin so tlrat those within were unable, even by frantic efforts, to force the door open, and in order to save their lives they bad to climb on deck through the skylight : and even when on deck one unfortunate passenger got his legs broken by some of the deck cargo striking him. We again call the attention of the authorities to this matter, and demand that the lives of those who go to sea in ships shall receive some consideration at their hands. Surely sailors and passengers have enough to contend with in wind and sea without being needlessly exposed to the dangers of a deck cargo.
