WESLEYAN CHURCH SOIREE.
The annual soiree in connection with Mangawhare Wesleyan Church was held in the Dargaville Hall on Friday evening last. The s.s. Tangihua was laid on for the conveyance of friends at Kopuru, Mititai, and Aratapu and in spite of the heavy counter attraction at Te Kopuru the steamer was fully patronised and cleared her charter : the jAra'pohue people were the most numerous. The passage up, as also the return, was made against the tide and the tea -was well on before the down-river folks put in an appearance. The tables, which were beautifully laid, and supplied with all that could be desired, were well filled by the up-river friends for the first sitting. The attendance was large and the seats of the Hall all occupied during the Concert. Mr M. Harding occupied the chair and as the programme was long and the time advanced he refrained from making an opening address. As seems now to be invariably the case several of those whose names appeared on the programme did not put in an appearance. Miss E. M. Harrison, a visitor to Arapohue, kindly consented to sing in the place of one of the absentees and so well did she do her part that an encore was demanded to which she responded. Mr M. Harding read the report for the year. The following were the other items of the programme Pianoforte solo, Miss F. Dargaville; Song, ‘ The Mighty Deep,’ Mr H. Buchanan; song, ‘Ping Out, Wild Bells.’ Mrs M. Harding; song, • A Soldier and a Man,’ Mr Higgott ; song, ‘Someone’s Sweetheart,’ MissL. Hill; song, ‘ ‘ Life’s Story,’ Miss Faithful ; recitation, Mr A. E. Harding; three Selections by the Oturei Maori Choir ; Pianoforte solo, Miss McLean ; song, ‘ The Old Oak,’ Mr Mason ; song, ‘The Crescent and The Cross,’ Mrs A. E. Harding; recitation, ‘ The Maiden Martyr Mr G. Elliott; song, Mr Dudding ; song, ‘ Castles in the \ir,’ Mrs M. Harding. Several of the performers and the items were new t® the audience, and though we could name some which seemed to hit the popular taste better than others, it is sufficient to say that the concert as a whole was very good and gave satisfaction.
