PAPAROA.
[from OSH OWN correspondent]. During the past month (February) we have been favoured with visits from deputations from the two political parties at present active in New Zealand, —Liberal and Conservative. Mr W‘ J. Napier, solicitor of Auckland, as a delegate from the Auckland Liberal Association, delivered a brilliant address in the Paparoa Hall, on the 22nd ult.,to a large audience advocating the policy of the Ballance Government. A full account of this address (as delivered at Matakohe) has already appeared in the newspapers. Motions expressing confidence in the present Government and in favour of forming a branch of the Liberal Association in Paparoa were carried. A few days afterward, three gentlemen from the National Association of New Zealand, Messrs'Monk, Bell, and Haslie, addrcsst’d nioeiing of settlers. At the close s ,-vi i ve institution v. be Liberals, however, pn dominate in this district. I must correct an error in my remarks in a recent letter, on the painting of the Wesleyan Church here. I blamed the neglect of the work to the Circuit Stewards: lam now informed that these are not responsible, in that capacity, for attending to the painting. This is the business of the trustees of the building, and on these, if anyone, should rest the blame. But much difficulty has been encountered in raisin the needful funds. The paltry few Maungaturoto people who attended our recent Show formed a decided contrast to the crowd who went over from Paparoa to the Otamatea Society’s Exhibition at Maungaturoto a few days afterward. Truly Paparoa did not pay Maungaturoto out “in her own coin.” This summer has been the wettest known for years, The rain has considerably interfered with the timber traffic. Mr Cliff has the contract for wagoning out the logs from Chadwick’s bush, worked by Mr D, H. McKenzie.
