Section 146 of the Licensing Act says : “ If any innkeeper permits drunkenness, or and violent, quarrelsome or notions conduct to take place on his premises, or sells any liquor|to any person already in a state of intoxication, or by any means incites or encourages any person to drink he shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding for the first offence £2O, and not exceeding for the second or any subsequent offence £50.” A friend supplies ns with the above, evidently being of the opinion that it has been overlooked by innkeepers and police alike. Mr W. J. Napier addressed a meeting of settlers at Matakohe last week and was most favourably received. At the close of his address the meeting expressed its absolute confidence in the Ballance Ministry, and its conviction that all oountry settlers should support the Government, It was also decided to establish a branch of the National Liberal Federation in Matakohe. Mr James Adams also addressed the meeting which lasted from seven p.m. to halfpast ten p.m.

Mr A. E. Harding, County Chairman, returned from Auckland on Thursday evening, bringing with him his bride, The marriage took place in Auckland on Saturday last, the happy bride being Miss Astley, who during her late residence at Mangawhare was a general favourite, and valuable help in good work. The party landed at Aratapu where a large number of people awaited the arrival of the steamer. The Aratapu Brass Band turned cut and in a pair horse waggon followed Mr and Mrs Harding in their drive home. The band returned home later on making their voices better heard than their instruments.

The Aratapu and Mangawhare Cricket Clubs meet for the third time this season to-morrow afternoon. The previous matches resulted in one draw, and a win for the up-river Club. To morrow's match is to he played at Aratapu in Mr Webb’s paddock. The ground is far behind the Mangawhare pitch for cricketing purposes and also as regards the comfort of on-look-ers, but it wasconsidered only fair to give the Artapu people an opportunity of witnessing a game without having to travel far for it, and if the afternoon is fine there will probably be a large attendance on the ground. The players chosen to represent Aratapu are Messrs Marcroft, Slater, French, Stallworthy, Bayly, Nield, A. Smith, G. Elliott, T> Walker, S, Edmonds and W. A. Morgan. Mangawhare we anticipate will bring Messrs Mansill, Brown, Harding, Beale, Masefield, Forde, Fitzpatrick, Marriner, McLean and Stansfield with them. Tha match starts at 2 p.nh
